Background

In India, an increasing number of women are breaking traditional gender barriers by entering male-dominated fields, such as the auto-rickshaw sector. This shift represents a significant transformation, showcasing women’s entrepreneurship, resilience, and pursuit of financial independence. By exploring various dimensions of their lives and work, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of their experiences, offering insights to inform policy initiatives and social changes that can empower future generations of women in non-traditional occupations.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this study are to:

  1. Understand the socio-economic background of women auto drivers in India.
  2. Examine the entrepreneurial motivations and aspirations of women entering the auto-rickshaw sector.
  3. Identify safety concerns and experiences faced by women auto drivers in the workplace.
  4. Assess the support networks and resources available to women auto drivers, considering user behavior, power dynamics, and well-being.

The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive framework that can inform policy implications to enhance the status and well-being of women auto drivers.

Methodology

The study involves interviewing approximately 250 women auto drivers in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including:

Gathering data on socio-economic backgrounds, safety concerns, and support networks.
Conducting in-depth interviews to explore entrepreneurial motivations, aspirations, and workplace experiences.

The project aims to identify:
