About the Project

Solutions for Transformative Rural Enterprises and Empowerment (STREE) was set-up to further propel NRLM’s vision of creating a robust enabling entrepreneurial ecosystem for women in rural India, a technical assistance program. The STREE program is spearheaded by LEAD at Krea University and is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The primary aim of STREE is to ensure institutional support mechanisms are in place, to enable women to manage higher-order and more entrepreneurial ventures in the non-farm space.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Associate to work in our STREE project. In 2018, through the National Rural Economic Transformation Project (NRETP), the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and the World Bank collaborated to build on the learnings from DAY-NRLM and pilot a new generation of economic initiatives including high-growth entrepreneurship models in 13 low-income states of India. The project aims to support about eighty thousand rural enterprises by June 2023.

Key Responsibilities of the Position

  • Work with the NRLM non-farm team to provide them data driven insights using NRLM data and other secondary data sources.
  • Work with the NRLM non-farm to improve the data quality and data management systems of NLRM non-farm team.
  • Work closely with other STREE team members to support the implementation of NRETP project.
  • Develop robust monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) framework to facilitate data-driven decision making and to assess the progress of activities and the program impact.
  • Conduct data analysis (including advanced data analysis) on studies/evaluations undertaken by the STREE team.
  • Identify enterprise relevant secondary and alternate sources of data and derive insights to support STREE/NRLM program design.
  • Develop performance benchmarks for enterprises using unit level data provided by NRLM.
  • Assist in the design and field-testing of survey instruments and develop and implement appropriate structures and systems for larger randomized interventions in the field.

Background and Qualifications


  • Master’s Degree in Economics, Data Science or Development Studies, or related field is mandatory.

Work Experience

  • 2 to 3 years of data analytics experience in related fields.

Key Competencies / Attributes

  • Extensive experience of using statistical analysis packages like STATA, R
  • Experience in working with government data or unstructured data is preferred
  • Experience in working with geospatial data preferred
  • Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, analysis, distribution etc.)
  • Flexibility and ability to deal with uncertainty. Adaptability to project needs and schedules
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to travel required
