About the Role

The scientific writer will be responsible for composing a variety of documents on research undertaken by LEAD. The scientific writer should be able to develop a variety of learning outputs, including peer-reviewed publications, white papers, blogs, books, and policy briefs. Readers of these publications can be experts or laypeople, so science writers are responsible for conveying information to a wide audience successfully.

The position is for part-time consultancy on a need basis. As a science writer you will be required to research, write and edit scientific papers, articles and features, for LEAD, targeted to be published in professional publications, specialist scientific and technical journals, and the general media.

Science writers need to understand complex scientific information, theories and practices. You should be able to write in a clear, concise, and accurate language that can be understood by the general public.

Your job might have an element of editing or broader communications responsibilities in addition to researching and writing.

Key Responsibilities of the Position

The particular activities you will undertake include:

  • Producing articles for publication in print and online mediums according to agreed style guidelines, while adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Conducting interviews with LEAD researchers and external experts as required.
  • Attending academic and press conferences. 
  • Reading and researching specialist media and literature, e.g. scientific papers, company reports, newspapers, magazines, journals, press releases, and internet resources including social media.
  • Attending meetings or taking part in conference calls with the relevant teams. 
  • Meeting with colleagues to plan the content of a document or publication.
  • Conducting reference searches.
  • Reviewing and amending work in response to technical inputs and feedback from reviewers.
  • Occasionally reading page proofs from printers and checking colour proofs.



  • A postgraduate/masters degree in the field of economics or social science is required.
  • An additional postgraduate qualification in journalism or scientific communications is preferred.
  • Published examples in leading journals.
  • More than 7 years of experience in a related field.

  • Ability to work under pressure to deadlines.
  • Resilience, flexibility, persistence, and self-motivation.
  • A sound understanding of standard computer programs.
