Project Geography: Chennai

CDF organized a public consultation for informal sector workers to contribute to the City Development Plan for Chennai. The consultation was the first time that workers from the informal sector were formally included in a planning process in India. The meeting, held on February 14, 2009, had over 220 attendees, mostly female, and representing a wide range of organizations and professions. CDF used this opportunity to gain insight into planning processes, especially when consultants were involved, a new phenomenon related to the advent of the National Urban Renewal Mission.
