About the Role: The position is for a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project on digital labour markets and women’s economic empowerment hosted by IFMR. The Project Manager (PM) will be responsible for taking a lead role in operational activities. It will entail bringing sound project management experience to help plan and implement research projects. The PM will have excellent writing and communication skills, good sectoral understanding and a creative and problem-solving outlook. The role will entail extensive partner management with the possibility of having to manage multiple partners. This role is ideal for someone who wants to pursue a career in policy in practice. 

Key Responsibilities:

Research LeadershipManage administrative requirements of the project portfolio, including financial management, budgeting, procurement, contract set-up and compliance, grant reporting, deliverable tracking, etc.

Ensure appropriate systems are designed and put in place to maintain compliance with grants and institutional guidelines for processes including planning, budgeting, procurement, reporting, legal matters, etc.

Prepare detailed budgets and work plans with the accounts/finance team and researchers.

Coordinate with research teams to ensure timely submission of grant narrative, financial reports and projections, subgrantee/contract reports and deliverables in the portfolio to keep the project running smoothly. 
CommunicationEffectively communicate to stakeholders – written and verbal – i.e., co-PIs, Survey Teams, Research Manager, Project partners and donors. Timely response to inputs for project reports and other outputs.

Manage communication of project updates via various media. Maintain and update project website/blog/Twitter accounts.
Resource ManagementEnsure timely submission of donor/grant reports – liaise with internal teams to gather appropriate information for submission Attend partner meetings

Capacity Building ActivitiesWriting and DisseminationContribute to blogs and events related to the project.

Edit project reports and provide up-to-date summaries of the project for the website and other promotional activities (conference, e-newsletter, etc.).
Visitors and workshopsOrganise research workshops and liaise with academic visitors.

Background and Qualifications:

Educational

  • Master’s Degree in Economics, Finance, Business, Development or Management.  

Work Experience

  • 4 to 5 years of management experience in development or related fields. 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain an organised and structured work style.
  • Proven ability to handle several different projects/tasks at one time, successfully complete tasks assigned, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with budget management 
  • Previous experience of managing a team 
  • The ability to present and negotiate with senior members is a plus. 

Key Competencies/Attributes:

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Independent worker; takes initiative to lead and manage multiple tasks and propose solutions with minimal supervision. 
  • Attention to detail and advanced writing and presentation skills for communicating with multiple partners.   

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Understanding of academic research.
  • Experience working with donors, governments, and survey organisations. 

The position will be contractual for a period of one year, renewable for an additional year, and the salary will be competitive.
