Research Manager, IFMR LEAD



IFMR LEAD is an action-oriented research organization that specializes in finding solutions to complex, tactical challenges in development through research, co-creation, and innovation. Combining theory with methodological rigor and fit-for-purpose approaches, we systematically probe some of the ‘big’, unanswered questions in global development. Over the last decade and a half, LEAD has collaborated with leading academics, policymakers and practitioners to push the frontiers of development policy and practice in India, and nurture local capacity to solve problems analytically.

About the Position

We are seeking a self-driven Research Manager to oversee the implementation of IFMR LEAD’s research projects. The Research Manager will play a key role in strategic planning and management of projects and coordinate with various functional teams to ensure timely implementation.


•      Managing and supervising implementation of research projects; including supervising and training research associates on data collection, field management and analysis
•      Project Management: Strategic planning of project phases, roles for each project team member (including Field Managers), timeline & check-in dialogues, liaising & communication updates to external stakeholders, internal team and management reporting
•      Provide support on preparing research proposals, design, survey implementation and monitoring, data management, report writing and dissemination and policy outreach
•      Coordinating on the project finance by providing budgeting assumptions, project timelines and other reference inputs to Finance Managers for preparing budgets and responding to queries on the finance that the Finance Manager or donor may have
•      Working with Survey Operations and Data Operations teams to iron out operational issues
•      Responsible for ensuring the implementation of high quality research systems and processes to ensure that quality data is generated on the project
•      Responsible for compliance with data protocols and maintain updated data in any uniform system that the organization uses to comply with project data
•      Coordinating writing of donor reports and general project reports and ensuring high quality outputs to direct input and review
•      Coordinating with local partner organizations for successful running of project
•      General responsibilities across admin/finance, policy and training: Team ERs planning, tracking performance, coaching through check-in sessions and defining potential gaps and corresponding action plans
•      Liaising with academics, officials, policymakers, donors, partner organizations
•      Representing IFMR LEAD in meetings and conferences
•      Participating in training activities for IFMR LEAD’s internal trainings and CLEAR activities
•      Maintain clear lines of communication with Principal Investigators and the Senior Management including the Associate Director and or Executive Director


•      Master’s degree or above in Economics/Public Policy/Development Studies or any other related discipline.
•      3-5 years demonstrated previous experience in development research and managing teams in developing countries
•      Demonstrated experience with business development, developing and designing proposals and engaging with donors
•      Experienced with managing research teams and delivery high quality final analysis and reports
•      Experienced in stakeholder management with stakeholders ranging from academics, donors, government bodies, local researchers, NGOs and such.
•      Familiarity with STATA and/or SPSS, R is preferred
•      Excellent management and organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in English
•      Flexible, self-motivated, detail orientated, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
