INTERNSHIP FOR 2018 SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM – Catalyst: Inclusive Cashless Payment Partnership

Location: New Delhi/Jaipur
Duration: 3 months with opportunity to transition into a full-time opportunity based on interest and performance.

Catalyst is an initiative housed at Institute of Finance Management and Research seeded by an alliance between U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of India to increase
adoption of digital payments in India, using a targeted ecosystem approach. A meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Modi during the latter’s visit to the White House in June
2015 laid the foundation of this initiative with both countries recognizing the need to expand financial inclusion as a means to fostering inclusive economic growth. Catalyst aims to build digital payment labs based on real-life geo-economic context to comprehensively test, iterate and scale interventions that
can positively impact merchant and consumer payments behaviour. It will combine new technologies, business models, and institutional innovations to accelerate digital payments adoption among low income populations.

Catalyst consists of a small team of entrepreneurial individuals from diverse sectors like fin-tech, banking, telecommunications, microfinance, strategy consulting, regulatory low income research and
Government, Catalyst is set up as an autonomous and independent organization housed within IFMR LEAD at Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR) and supported through USAID’s Mobile solutions Technical Assistance and Research (Mstar) program with FHI360.


This internship position offers a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a fast evolving sector where India is on the leading edge of global innovation. The summer associate will engage with a cross-section of stakeholders – national and local governments, corporate partners, financial institutions, technology startups, payment system providers, and research agencies– to design, roll out, and improve end-to-end digital payments solutions. The selected candidate will work closely with Catalyst’s operations and programmatic teams to help implement project strategy, and ensure high quality, relevance and impact of the project. This is a cross-functional role for an enterprising and natural leader. It is located in Delhi/Jaipur with some possible travel to Mumbai and Bangalore.


•     Tracking key supply side trends in technology and business that are relevant to Catalyst’s goals and activities;
•     Design and evaluation of end-to-end solutions for roll out and scale-up, including technology and product reviews, business models, distribution and marketing strategies, demand creation strategies, and policy and regulatory linkages;
•     On-the-ground solution roll out and optimization through the application of lean startup research principles;
•     Promotion and representation of Catalyst brand in target geography;
•     Development of monitoring and reporting tools for project execution and management;
•     Contribution to learning and dissemination of key insights for action;

Required Skills:

•     Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, business, engineering, urban planning, public policy or related discipline, with good academic standing;
•     Excellent conceptual and analytical thinking
•     Entrepreneurial acumen with on-the-fly problem solving capabilities, comfort in navigating uncertainty, and the ability to innovate and work in fast changing environments;
•     A self-starter with an outcomes orientation and a strong execution bias;
•     Passion for digital payments and financial inclusion;
•     Exceptional written and verbal communication skills (English and/or Hindi);
•     Excellent organizational skills (e.g., attention to detail, multi-tasking);
•     Integrity and strong work
